After Hideo Kojima left Konami a few years ago. After completing Metal Gear Solid V. Konami has been missing from the video game scene. Silent Hills was announced before his departure before it was scrapped. PT, the demo for Silent Hills was scary and the graphics were amazing. Once things started to go pear-shaped but, it was pulled from the PlayStation Store. Of course, following that, people started selling PS4s with the game loaded for a ridiculous amount of money. I can’t believe it’s already been 3 years since their last console game, MGS Survive.
VGC is reporting that Konami may be coming back to developing Metal Gear Solid games as well as their other franchises. There is no news about whether Kojima will be involved in any capacity since he has moved on. It will most likely be remakes of the old titles for MGS, and new games for the others.
Not So Fast
They have released one game since MGS: V. eFootball, the evolution of Pro Evolution Soccer. It has been met with backlash from fans of the series. Due to the poor graphics. This makes fans of their IPs nervous. Konami released Metal Gear Survive to disappointing reviews and which put the final nail in the coffin. It’s been a difficult time for Konami on the premium video game front. Which is why I’m surprised they are coming back with new games. If the Pachinko and mobile gaming market has been so lucrative. Why take a risk on games that need higher amounts of investment compared to mobile games.
Where Have They Been?
They have been focusing on Pachinko machines as well as mobile games. MGS V was a huge strain on their purse strings, to the point where a whole chapter was cut out before release. Metal Gear Solid 3 Pachinko machines contained cutscenes that were remade and of better quality than the PS2 and the remasters. Fingers crossed that the next remake will be of the same or better quality, but we can only wait and see.
Kept you waiting, huh? – Metal Gear Solid
I hope they do not spoil their franchises. I’ve never been a fan of any other of their titles except the Metal Gear Series. I still have Silent Hill 2 & 3 on the shelf ready to play. Maybe I’ll give them a go this Halloween to add a bit of spookiness this month. It does look like from VGC’s sources they will be focusing on remaking Metal Gear Solid 3: Snake Eater. If they can do it successfully, they will win a lot of their fanbase back. You never know, they may even be able to lure Kojima to work with them. Here’s hoping.
I best not get ahead of myself yet. There has been no official word from Konami about any projects. They have apologised for eFootball which is very unlike them. So would only strengthen the chances of them going back to major game development. Anyway, I’m going back to dreaming about the possibilities.
